Dribbling in field hockey refers to the ability to move the ball in any direction while running or moving with the ball on the field. This type of dribbling allows the player to change direction quickly, move past defenders, and maintain possession of the ball. There are several dribbling techniques that players can use to develop their 3D dribbling and normal dribbling skills:
The push drag right to left
This technique involves pushing the ball to one side with the stick, then quickly dragging it back toward the other side. This allows the player to change direction quickly and move past defenders. This is the most used way to eliminate players.
The flick
This technique involves flicking the ball up and over an opponent’s stick. This can be useful for getting past players who are blocking the path to goal. Check out the photo!
The drag dribbling technique
This technique involves positioning the ball in the hook of the stick. Normally players will move the ball from reverse to forehand to drag the ball back to reverse. This quick motion is hard to defend when done very wide.
The fake/ the dummy stick
Player do this by faking a pass by intentionally not push passing the ball and covering it. The player makes a semi circle over the ball and moves the ball towards the right.
The Turn
A turn is a 360-degree turn that can be completed while holding on to the ball or running with it. It allows the player to change direction and avoid the defender without losing possession of the ball. The pivoting motion allows the player to use the body to quickly cover the ball to avoid tackles. This dribbling techniques is done by mid fielders to escape from difficult situations.
It is important to note that these are advanced techniques that players should master basic stickhandling and ball control before attempting. Also, it’s important to use them in a game-like situation and with adequate space, in order to not put yourself in risk of losing the ball or getting injured. Practice and repetition are key to mastering these techniques. It’s important to practice these skills regularly to become comfortable and confident using them in game situations. We advise to stick to the technique that suits your game and mastering it!
